On Thursday, December 31, the town gathers downtown for an early evening of festive music and food, and at 7 p.m. a sparkling ball drops from 130 feet in the air in the middle of the village. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets, claim a spot early, and grab dinner or a treat from one of the downtown restaurants before the countdown. Little kids get the whole celebration, noisemakers and all, and can still be home in pajamas well before the real new year arrives. It is a relaxed, small-town event rather than a ticketed party, and it caps a holiday season that has filled the downtown Christmas Courtyard with lights and weekend music since late November. ## Similar picks in Austin - [EmilyAnn Trail of Lights 2026](https://grassyknees.com/austin/activities/emilyann-trail-of-lights-2026--listing-b0399fbbf9ffedcf81e093e2) — Nov 28 – Dec 26 · 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM · EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens, Wimberley · All ages · Free · checked Oct 16.
