On the third Wednesday of almost every month, Ranger Madalyn from Buescher State Park visits Little Bookworms, the children's storytime at Smithville Public Library, as a guest reader. Each session has a theme: the ranger reads two or three related books, the library sets out the children's books on that theme for families to check out, and kids finish with a matching themed craft to take home. It starts at 10:30 a.m. and usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour including the craft. All ages are welcome and the program is free; it is a gentle introduction to nature topics for preschoolers and early readers and needs no registration. Dates in the coming months are Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16, 2026 and Jan. 20, 2027.
