Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a 15,000-acre sanctuary near Denver, one of the largest urban refuges in the country, home to more than 330 species including a bison herd and the endangered black-footed ferret. It is free to visit. The refuge is open sunrise to sunset in fall, winter and spring; the Visitor Center is open Wednesday-Sunday 9:00 am-4:00 pm (closed federal holidays). Suggested visits: hike the 1-mile Discovery Trail from the Visitor Center patio and stop at the black-footed ferret exhibit, walk the 0.6-mile Lake Mary Loop with boardwalk and piers, or drive the 11-mile Wildlife Drive (visitors must stay in their vehicle when viewing bison). Kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge by completing at least four activity pages in the booklet available at the Visitor Center. Free nature programs are posted on the refuge events page.
