## About

Wint Nature Center at Independence Oaks County Park near Clarkston hosts an early-evening winter solstice hike on the Friday before the year's longest night. Led by Oakland County Parks staff, the walk is designed as a restorative way to seek out the early darkness of December and experience the park's trails after sunset. The county lists it as suitable for all ages, so families with young children can try a short night outing together, while older kids can test how much they notice once the light fades. The hike runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on December 18 and costs $5 per person for both residents and non-residents. Registration is through the county parks WebTrac system, and the session was open when checked. Expect cold weather and dark trails, so bundle children up in warm layers and sturdy footwear. Families who cannot make Friday can join the similar hike at Red Oaks Nature Center in Madison Heights the following evening.
