The last Walktober walk of 2026 celebrates Jackson County's 200th anniversary on the Independence Square. Families check in at the Historic Truman Courthouse at 10 a.m. and walk the one-mile Truman Trail at their own pace, or join a costumed President Harry S. Truman for a guided walk through his hometown at 10:15 a.m. Inside the courthouse visitors can see Truman's office and courtroom, there is live ukulele music from Uke 66, and local artists paint the scene during a Quick Paint event. Leashed dogs are welcome. The first 200 participants receive a commemorative Walktober button designed by artist Brooke Wangwe, which can be shown at participating businesses around the Square for discounts. The short, flat route and history stops make it a manageable morning outing for school-age children and strollers. The walk is presented with the Independence Square Association and Visit Independence.
