LA Recreation and Parks and artist-in-residence Liseth Amaya build a Día de los Muertos community altar at the Lummis Home – El Alisal in Highland Park with support from the Los Angeles Parks Foundation. Two hands-on community workshops lead up to it: an alebrije clay workshop on Saturday, October 24 (4–6 p.m.), where participants sculpt the colorful fantasy creatures of Mexican folk art, and an evening on Friday, October 30 (6–8 p.m.) with cafecito, pan de muerto, garland making and setting up the altar together. Both workshops require sign-up and have limited spaces. The finished altar is on view October 29 to November 2, open to the public Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; visitors are invited to leave notes for their loved ones.
