The full experience lasts about three hours and centers on a 90-minute train ride 'to the North Pole' with singing, games and a reading of the classic children's book The Polar Express. The Conductor punches each rider's golden ticket, everyone gets hot chocolate and a cookie on board, Santa visits the train, and every child receives a silver bell. Cars seat only 32 to 88 riders, so children are close to the performers and part of the story. Pajamas are a popular choice for young riders. The council has run the ride for more than 25 years; it is its largest fundraiser and supports environmental education for local young people.
