UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest pre-Columbian site north of Mexico: around 1100 the city covered over 4,000 acres with about 120 earthen mounds and nearly 20,000 people. The state protects about 2,200 acres including 72 mounds; walk the grounds and Monks Mound. The Interpretive Center's cultural gallery is closed (NAGPRA review), but the lobby with restrooms, site model, canoe exhibit, a temporary exhibit and gift shop is open. Dogs must be leashed.
