The Friends of Weedon Island hold their 14th annual Gopher Weedon 8K Trail Run on Saturday, October 24, at Weedon Island Preserve, a 3,700-acre preserve on Tampa Bay in northeast St. Petersburg. The professionally timed 8K (4.9 miles) is open to runners and walkers and follows dirt and boardwalk trails through mangroves, salt marsh and Florida scrub, where participants may spot gopher tortoises, the threatened species the race is named for, as well as relic Indian mounds and dune ridges. Refreshments follow the race, and finishers can visit the Cultural and Natural History Center. Registration is $55, open to ages 11 and up, and closes October 23 at 7 pm. Proceeds benefit the Friends of Weedon Island.
