Choreographer Jennifer Weber keeps Tchaikovsky's score and the familiar story (Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince battling a gang of mice and visiting the Land of Sweets) but moves it to contemporary New York City, with a cast of twelve hip-hop and contemporary dancers, a DJ, a violinist, digital graffiti projections and MC Da Brat. The theater rates it appropriate for all ages, and it runs about two hours including a 20-minute intermission, which makes it a good first Nutcracker for kids who might fidget through a classical ballet, and a fun one for tweens and teens. Eight performances run Tuesday, November 17 through Sunday, November 22: evenings at 7:30 p.m., a Thursday 1 p.m. matinee and weekend 2 p.m. matinees; the Sunday, November 22 matinee is audio described. Tickets start at $75 and are sold through the theater's box office. ## Similar picks in Washington, DC - [Virginia National Ballet's The Nutcracker at the Hylton Center — Black Friday](https://grassyknees.com/washington-dc/activities/virginia-national-ballet-s-the-nutcracker-at-the-hylton-center-black-f--listing-fa1bee08ffa790c239ce709b) — Fri, Nov 27 · 2:00 PM · Hylton Performing Arts Center, Merchant Hall, Manassas · All ages · From $54.50 · checked Oct 27.
