Dogtober Fest, now in its 32nd year, fills the Kemper Outdoor Education Center in Fleming Park with thousands of dogs and their families. Free games and contests include bobbing for biscuits, sack races, musical discs, a Howl-o-ween costume contest, dog and owner look-alikes, and biggest and smallest dog. Demonstrations cover frisbee dogs, obedience, rally, agility and nose work, and more than 90 booths feature rescues, adoptable pets, trainers, vets and dog products. Ticketed arena activities (one ticket $7, two for $12) let dogs try agility runs, a canine adventure challenge and similar sports. Admission is free with a donation of dry or canned dog food for area shelters. Children who love animals enjoy the contests even without a dog, and hourly prize drawings run all day.
