For Día de los Muertos, Elmwood Park Zoo sets up two ofrendas: one honoring zoo animals that have died and a Community Pet Ofrenda for families' own departed pets. During regular zoo hours on October 31 and November 1, visitors are invited to place premade paper offerings on both altars, and families can also submit a photo of a pet through the zoo's online form to be included. It is a quiet, reflective stop that can help children talk about a pet they miss, and it fits into a regular zoo visit (it overlaps with the zoo's Boo at the Zoo weekend). The program is presented by the zoo's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility committee and is free with paid zoo admission.
