Each December, Columbia Springs celebrates the return of spawning chum salmon to the Columbia River beside its Columbia Grove property. On Saturday, December 5, from 2 to 4 p.m., families can drop in at Wood's Landing to learn about chum salmon and watch them spawn; a couple of speakers are featured at 3 p.m., and Sam Robinson, Vice Chairman of the Chinook Indian Nation council, is scheduled to share a blessing. The event is hosted by the Wood and Gordon families and described as family-friendly. Visitors can meet in the Columbia Springs parking lot at 2 p.m. and walk to the spawning site as a group, or park along Old Evergreen Highway at Riverwood Drive (at least 10 feet from the train tracks) and walk in on their own. Organizers recommend polarized sunglasses and binoculars for better viewing and weather-appropriate clothing, because the event happens rain or shine.
