The Museum of Kansas City with Mattie Rhodes Art Center

In conjunction with its Connecting Cultures Across Kansas City: The Hand-in-Hand Folk Art Collection exhibit, the Museum of Kansas City hosts an afternoon on the history, traditions and symbolism of Día de los Muertos. Artists from Mattie Rhodes Art Center guide participants in making traditional ofrenda items: a colourful sugar skull, tissue-paper marigolds and papel picado. Mexican hot chocolate and pan de muerto from Panaderia De Las Americas are served while you create. The workshop runs 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 and costs $15 per person; space is limited, so buy tickets in advance. It suits families with school-age children who enjoy hands-on crafts, the week before the Day of the Dead.
