Every Saturday and Sunday this fall the Nelson-Atkins runs a free, drop-in family art station called Free Weekend Fun. The current theme, Bach to Nature, is inspired by Farhad Ostovani, an artist who painted pictures in response to music. At the Fun Spot on the lobby level of the Bloch Building, children listen to Bach's Goldberg Variations while making rubbings of rose leaves and building collages from the patterns. Families can then walk to Gallery 203 to see Ostovani's Goldberg Variations and hunt for flowers in the surrounding artworks with help from museum guide volunteers. No registration is needed, so it works well as a short hands-on stop during a museum visit with preschool and school-age children; plan on 30 to 60 minutes.
