Kansas City's Owen/Cox Dance Group brings back its contemporary jazz take on E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1816 story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" - the darker original behind the familiar ballet - performed with live music by The People's Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City. Public performances are Saturday, December 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 13 at 2 p.m. in Yardley Hall at the Midwest Trust Center, Johnson County Community College. It is recommended for grades 3 and up, so it suits school-age kids and teens rather than toddlers. Tickets start at $25. After the Sunday matinee there is an optional High Tea at 4 p.m. ($25 per person, prepaid by noon Friday, December 4).
