OC Parks' Critter Investigation is a one-hour preschool program at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center in the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. Each session features a different animal and combines a story time, an age-appropriate hike and a themed craft. October's session is Terrific Tarantulas and November's is Talented Turkeys. Content is pitched at preschoolers aged 2 to 5, though all are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes; the trail used for the hiking part is not stroller-friendly. Advance registration is recommended but walk-ins are welcome, and OC Parks asks that every participant, including children, be registered. In bad weather the program moves indoors.
