Manual Cinema turns two Mo Willems picture books — Leonardo, the Terrible Monster and Sam, the Most Scaredy-Cat Kid in the Whole World — into a 45-minute family show at The Wallis in Beverly Hills. Leonardo tries hard to be scary but never manages it, until he meets Sam, the most scaredy-cat kid in the world; the story becomes one about courage and an unlikely friendship. The company builds the show live with hundreds of illustrated paper puppets, book pages, furry monster puppets and original music played on stage, projected like a film; audiences can watch the screen or look below it to see the artists creating each scene in real time. There are two performances: Friday evening and Saturday morning. Running time is 45 minutes with no intermission, which suits young children and picture-book fans.
