South Mountain Community Library on 24th Street hosts its own free Bike Safety Rodeo on a Saturday morning in mid-November, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., when the weather in south Phoenix is finally comfortable for riding outdoors. Children practise on an obstacle course in the library parking lot and pick up the rules of the road as they go, from where to ride to how to check traffic before crossing. The library's partner, Phoenix Children's Hospital, provides free helmets while supplies last. Riders can arrive with their own bikes and helmets, and a loaner bike or scooter is available for children who do not have one, so siblings can all take a turn. The program is listed for kids and requires no fee. To request an accommodation, contact Phoenix Public Library at 602-262-4636 (TTY 711) at least 14 business days in advance.
