Alton Main Street hosts the 33rd annual Community Tree Lighting in Lincoln-Douglas Square on Friday, Nov. 20 — the town's traditional Friday-before-Thanksgiving kickoff to the holidays. Santa Claus arrives at 6 p.m., and the free festivities include caroling, cookies and hot cocoa until 6:45 p.m., when Mayor David Goins switches on the tree, which is donated by the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club. Families are encouraged to bring cameras for photos with Santa and other costumed holiday characters; music, a blessing of the tree and community speakers round out the evening on the riverfront square at 100 Market St.
