The Missouri Department of Conservation runs a learn-to-fish morning for homeschool families at the historic Forest Park Hatchery on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. After a short lesson on fishing basics, participants put their new skills to work and compete to see who can catch the most fish; it is catch-and-release. All fishing gear and bait are provided, and no experience is needed. Wear clothes and closed-toe shoes suited to outdoor and water activities. Registrants must be at least 6 years old, children must be accompanied by an adult, and anyone aged 16 to 65 who fishes needs a Missouri fishing permit. Register every attendee individually through MDC's online system; 30 seats were open when checked. The hatchery, established in 1879 as Missouri's first fish-culture operation, is now used for education programs.
