About this adventure

Winter is prime season for exploring Joshua Tree National Park, when comfortable 60°F daytime temperatures replace summer heat and crisp desert skies create ideal hiking conditions for families. Two premier trails cater perfectly to young children: the 1.0-mile Hidden Valley Nature Trail, which loops through a bowl of giant monzogranite boulders once used by cattle rustlers, and the 1.1-mile Barker Dam Nature Trail. Both trails are flat, well-maintained loops featuring interpretive signs highlighting yucca trees, desert tortoises, and ancient Native American petroglyphs. Children love gently scrambling over low rock formations, spotting roadrunners, and exploring the historic Barker Dam water reservoir. Pack picnic lunches and plenty of water; parking areas have clean vault toilets and shaded ramadas.
