Leavenworth's annual Mayor's Holiday Tree Lighting takes place at Haymarket Square on the Friday before Thanksgiving. Food and gift vendors open at 4 p.m., the Holiday Parade starts at about 5:30 p.m., and the official tree lighting follows immediately after the parade. The parade runs from 5th and Seneca south to Delaware, west to 7th Street, south to Cherokee and east to Haymarket Square, so families can watch along the route or wait at the square for the lighting. Afterwards, Haymarket Square's light display is set to music on a radio station and stays up until the Monday after New Year's Day; families can pull in, tune the car radio to the station on the signs and enjoy the show from the car. The event is open to the public.
