A ranger-led evening hike on the North Trail Loop at Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area near Laughlin, timed for Halloween season. The ranger introduces the snakes, scorpions and spiders that live in this stretch of the Colorado River desert, then hands out candy and leads the group on a search around the park for real spiders and scorpions after dark. The two-hour program runs from 6 to 8 pm and is a good fit for families with school-age kids who like bugs and night walks; minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring water, closed-toe shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and a flashlight for spotting nocturnal wildlife. Meet at the north parking lot on the left-hand side of the park. No registration is required and there is no extra charge for the program beyond the park entrance fee ($10 per vehicle for Nevada residents, $15 for out-of-state visitors). The hike is weather dependent and may be cancelled without notice, so check the park website before heading out.
