A guided hike at Red Rock Canyon on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, timed to the full moon. A Southern Nevada Conservancy interpretive naturalist leads the 2.5-mile (4 km) moderate hike, using trivia and conversation to explore how the full moon has inspired human history and shaped desert life and to introduce the stars and night sky. Hikers watch for night-blooming yuccas, search for constellations and take in the sights and sounds of the desert after dark. The trail has uneven, rocky surfaces with minimal elevation gain, and prior hiking experience is recommended. With an age limit of 10+, it is a memorable holiday-break outing for older kids and teens with a parent. The hike runs from 4 to 6:30 pm, spanning sunset into darkness, so dress in warm layers and bring water and a light. It is free, but advance registration at the Red Rock TimeTap site is required; the trail location is sent after you register, and no Scenic Drive timed-entry reservation is needed.
