A Bureau of Land Management ranger leads a three-mile (4.8 km) round-trip moderate hike that tells the story of the Permian Kaibab Sea, the tropical ocean that covered the Las Vegas Valley about 275 million years ago. Along the way hikers look for marine fossils preserved in the rock; all fossils in the conservation area are protected, so the only thing to take home is photos. The hike runs about three hours on a Saturday morning and has an age limit of 10+, making it a good outing for older kids and teens who like fossils and can manage a moderate trail. The hike does not start at the Visitor Center or the Scenic Drive; directions are emailed after registration. The program is free but advance registration at the Red Rock TimeTap site is required. A timed-entry reservation is only needed if you also plan to visit the Scenic Drive or Visitor Center. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, a hat and sunscreen.
