A rain-ready Oregon twist on the holiday parade: anyone can decorate an umbrella (or a bicycle) and march four blocks up Main Street in downtown Milwaukie to historic City Hall, where the city tree is lit. No pre-registration is needed. Participants gather at the South Downtown Plaza near the post office; anyone entering the umbrella contest should arrive by 4:15 pm, when volunteers from the Milwaukie Arts Committee begin judging in the Most Creative, Most Festive and Most Milwaukie categories, each with prizes for both children and adults, plus Best Decorated Bicycle. The parade steps off at 4:30 pm. At City Hall the Rotary Club of Milwaukie serves free treats, hot chocolate and cider, the Power Pep Band plays, winners are announced around 5:30 and then the tree is lit; everything wraps up at 6 pm. Main Street is closed to traffic, so park in downtown lots or take the MAX Orange Line or bus.
