Riverside County Parks' Veterans Fishing Derby at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park in La Quinta, held the Saturday after Veterans Day to honor local veterans with a free afternoon of fishing and outdoor fun for all ages. Gates open at 6:30 am. From 2 to 4 pm a Veteran Resources Workshop connects veterans and their families with community resources, support services and recreation opportunities, and veterans can also take advantage of free camping offered with the event. The fishing derby itself runs from 4 to 8 pm, and the day ends at 8 pm with youth prizes and the derby prize ceremony, so children who fish have something to aim for. Bring your own rod and tackle, plus sun protection and layers for the evening. The event is free; RSVP online is appreciated but on-site registration is also available.
