California Revels marks its 40th season with a Midwinter Revels built around an American theme: a journey through the USA in 1933, told through songs, dances and stories from across the country. The plot follows a Mysterious Stranger waiting where two dusty roads cross for a man named Johnnie Jackson, and the production draws on musical roots, folkways and legendary tales before the cast and audience 'welcome Yule' at the end of the longest night. Revels shows are participatory — the audience is invited to clap, sing and dance along — which makes it a good first winter-solstice show for school-age children and a multigenerational outing. There are nine performances at the Douglas Morrisson Theatre in Hayward: Friday evenings at 7:30 PM and weekend matinees at 1:00 PM and evening shows at 6:00 PM. Seating is assigned this year, with VIP and standard sections and youth pricing for ages 18 and under; accessible seating for patrons with mobility needs and their companions is marked on the seating map.
