At Bull Run Regional Park, NOVA Parks turns gem mining into a Halloween story: an old 1800s mine shaft has supposedly started glowing and whispering, and young explorers are needed to pan for the truth. Children walk through a fog-filled mine entrance to the Haunted Sluice, pour a pouch of spooky mining rough into a sifting box and rinse it in running water to reveal crystals, monster bones or cursed relics. Then they take their finds to the dusty Assay Office, where the resident Mine Assayer helps identify each treasure and bags it up to take home. Two one-hour timeslots are offered, 4–5 p.m. and 5–6 p.m.; register ahead through NOVA Parks.
