Des Plaines lights its holiday tree on the first Friday in December, which in 2026 is Friday, December 4, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Metropolitan Square on Lee Street downtown. The city's annual gathering combines the tree lighting with live entertainment, photos with Santa and booths from local community groups, so it works as a short early-evening outing for families with young children before dinner. Metropolitan Square is an outdoor plaza; dress for the weather and plan on street or garage parking downtown. The Des Plaines History Center, which lists the event on its calendar, holds its Winter Fair holiday artisan market the next day.
