The City of Castle Pines fills the Village Square Shopping Area with a free fall festival on Saturday, October 24, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Children in costume can trick-or-treat along Trick-or-Treat Street, visit a petting zoo and browse the farmers market with their families. The highlight is the annual Castle Pines Pumpkin Race at 1:00 pm, in which families turn a pumpkin into a race car and send it down the course; entrants register in advance, either on their own or with a $25 race kit from the City (kits had to be ordered by October 22 and picked up at the City offices by noon October 23), and must follow the posted rules. New this year is a chili cookoff: home cooks pay a $20 entry fee, bring about two gallons of red, green or white chili ready to serve by 10 am and compete for the title of first Castle Pines Chili Cookoff Champion. The festival activities themselves are free, so it is an easy Halloween-weekend morning for families across northern Douglas County.
