A hands-on mystery activity at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum in which participants think like archaeologists and try to fix a dig that someone has badly bungled. Museum educators start with a brief history of archaeology and explain why context matters: where an object is found, what it is found with and how it is recorded can be as important as the artifact itself. Then the group uses observation and evidence to work out what happened at the dig and identify a misplaced artifact despite missing or mixed-up information, learning along the way how careful notes, maps and documentation turn objects into stories about people and the past. The activity runs from 11 am to 1 pm and is recommended for ages 8 and up, so it suits school-age kids who like puzzles and history. It is included with museum admission or membership; supplies are limited and offered first come, first served. RSVP is available on the event page.
