About this adventure
A family day in Liberty City built around the Bahamian tradition of Junkanoo. The FIU Public Humanities Lab organizes the afternoon at the Marshall Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, and the Museum of Miami brings one of its In-Community pop-ups, so children can try hands-on history and art-making activities and look at objects from the museum's education teaching collection. The program lists Junkanoo Rushes (the costumed, drum-and-cowbell street procession), musical demonstrations, a small pop-up exhibition explaining Junkanoo, food, and a culture fair where museums and heritage groups from South Florida and beyond set up tables. It suits all ages: little ones can watch the rush and the music, while school-age kids and teens can do the craft stations and talk to the exhibitors. Plan to drop in for an hour or stay the whole afternoon; the museum asks people to register through the Eventbrite link on its page.
