- Cosumnes River Preserve
The Cosumnes River Preserve protects one of California's last remaining un-dammed rivers and its wetlands, riparian oak forest, grasslands and sloughs; it is home to more than 250 bird species. Visitors can explore walking trails, boardwalks and paddling routes, and a visitor center with indoor and outdoor interpretive displays. Sandhill cranes typically arrive in late September and stay through March, with peak numbers at the Preserve in mid-December; the Wetlands Walk trail and boardwalk are good crane and waterfowl viewing spots, and self-guided audio tours are offered. Day-use only; no pets except service animals.
