About this adventure

In the stately 1854 Casa Grande manor at the edge of Almaden Quicksilver County Park, this county museum tells how local mercury (quicksilver) mining fed the California gold rush. Kids can peer into a mine-tunnel display that gives a glimpse of underground work, look at photographs of the old mine workings, and see artifacts and models showing how mercury was processed. Other rooms show how Cornish, Mexican and Chinese mining families lived and worked together in the 'hill' communities, and Casa Grande's Victorian-era rooms show life in the manor. It works well paired with a hike on the park's mining-history trails. The museum and grounds are ADA accessible; dress warmly, as the building's heat is not working. Dogs are not allowed on museum grounds.
