About this adventure

Fremont Peak State Park crowns the Gavilan Range above San Juan Bautista, about 11 winding miles up San Juan Canyon Road (vehicles over 25 feet are not recommended). From its 3,169-foot peak, hiking trails through grassland and pine-and-oak woodland look out over Monterey Bay, the San Benito and Salinas valleys and the Santa Lucia Mountains east of Big Sur, and the woods are home to many birds and mammals. There are picnic facilities, 25 campsites and two large group sites. Dogs are not allowed on trails. The park is also home to the Fremont Peak Observatory and its 30-inch telescope, where a volunteer association runs free public evening and solar programs from spring through fall. Weather at the peak changes quickly, so bring layers.
