The Waukegan Park District and Asociación Cultural Lake County host a free Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) community celebration at the Lakehurst Center on Sunday, November 1 from 1 to 5 pm. The afternoon features pan de muerto, altar exhibits, art vendors, music and dance performances, and art crafts for families. The organizers explain the tradition: families build altars and ofrendas decorated with marigolds, sugar skulls, photos, foods and cherished items to honor loved ones who have died, and they stress it is not a 'Mexican Halloween.' Admission is free and no preregistration is required, making it an easy way for children to learn about the holiday.
