Upcoming dates: Sun, Nov 15 · Sun, Dec 20
A guided hike through Galveston Island State Park's prairie, a landscape the park says has been transformed over the past few years: what was once regrowth after a prescribed burn is now a thriving mosaic of grasses, blooming flowers and wildlife. The hour-long program meets at the Nature Center, starts with a presentation on prairie grasses and continues with a short walk on a grass trail with some uneven spots. The hike has very little shade, so hats and sunglasses are highly recommended; bring sunscreen, bug spray, water, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable hiking shoes. It runs from 9 to 10 a.m. on two Sundays, November 15 and December 20, and can be cancelled for weather. Children 12 and under enter the park free; adults pay the $5 entry fee unless they hold a State Parks Pass.
