Sheldon Lake State Park runs short, free drop-in programs for families on late-October Saturdays. Arts in the Park (Saturday, October 24, 2:30–3:30 p.m.) is a come-and-go art session under the Pond Pavilion where children create a park-inspired artwork. Backyard Bass (Saturday, October 31, 9–10 a.m.) teaches fishing basics and lets kids practice casting at a 'backyard bass' target; no real fish are caught, which makes it ideal for young children. Both meet at the picnic area and stay in one spot. Bring water (a fountain is in Heron Plaza by the restrooms) and wear light layers, a hat and comfortable shoes, with sunscreen and bug spray. Sheldon Lake charges no day-use fee, and both programs are free.
