About this adventure
Mounds State Park east of Anderson protects 10 earthworks built by the prehistoric Adena-Hopewell people; the largest, the Great Mound, is believed to date to around 160 B.C. and may have been used for ceremonies and viewing astronomical alignments. The nature center has a wildlife viewing room, animal displays and interactive games, and naturalist-led hikes and interpretive programs are offered every weekend of the year. Short trails lead past the Great Mound on a boardwalk along a spring-fed creek and down to the White River; others are rugged with steep hills, so pick routes to suit small legs.
