Fort Lauderdale opens its holiday season at Esplanade Park on the New River with the evening that switches on Light Up Lauderdale, a ten-week run of holiday lights along the Riverwalk. Families get a kids' zone with crafts for the whole 5:30–8:30 pm window, a visit from Santa, a lighting ceremony at 6:30 pm and a holiday set by the Belles of Harmony from 7 pm. It is an easy first holiday outing for young children: come at the start for crafts and Santa, stay for the lights coming on, and leave before bedtime. After opening night the lights stay up along the river for later evening strolls.
