From October 2 through November 2 the River Walk and surrounding downtown streets host a free self-guided Day of the Dead trail. Families can hunt for colorful alebrijes (imaginative folk-art animal sculptures) at about ten river-level spots, from across the Briscoe Western Art Museum to the Rivercenter Lagoon and Stargazer Bridge, plus larger-than-life calaveras near Casa Rio, Arneson River Theatre and the corner of Houston and Losoya streets. Hotels, restaurants and LEGOLAND Discovery Center display ofrendas (altars) honoring loved ones. Nearby at La Villita stands a 38.5-foot Catrina sculpture. A separate ticketed GO RIO Río de la Vida boat tour (Tuesdays and Sundays at 7:30 pm, 45–50 minutes) narrates the art from the water; the trail itself can be walked any time.
