About this adventure
On two Saturday nights this fall, Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville opens its observatory after dark so visitors can take turns looking through the museum's telescope at objects in the evening sky. Staff pick the targets for each night: the November session lists Saturn, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Great Pegasus Cluster as possible sights, and the December session lists Saturn, Andromeda and the Pleiades. Both nights run 7 to 10 p.m. and are billed as suitable for all ages, which makes them an easy first stargazing outing for children who can stay up a little late. Only the observatory and the outdoor restrooms are open; the museum building itself is closed. The observatory is not heated, so dress for a cold night outside, and note that observing is not possible right around sunset. Clouds or bad weather can cancel a session. Tickets are $6 for non-members and $3 for members, bought online in advance.
