About this adventure

Ballet Theatre of Maryland opens its Nutcracker season with a single Sunday matinee in Hampstead, a few weeks before the company's December run at Maryland Hall in Annapolis — a closer option for families in Carroll and northern Baltimore County. Artistic Director Nicole Kelsch's production gives Tchaikovsky's ballet an Annapolis twist: the holiday party follows 19th-century Maryland Christmas customs, Clara's gift from Uncle Drosselmeier is a German nutcracker doll that is a family heirloom, the battle with the rats becomes a naval fight, the Land of the Snowflakes resembles the snowy garden of the William Paca House, and tiny crabs and oysters greet Clara in the Land of the Sweets before the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Caramel, Popcorn and Peppermint confections dance. Sets, costumes and choreography are all new. The company describes it as a holiday tradition for audiences of all ages; child and student tickets cost less than adult seats.
