About this adventure

HoCo Arts' School's Out series fills days when Howard County public schools have no classes with hands-on visual-art sessions for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, held at the historic Capitoline Center on Court Avenue in Ellicott City. On November 3 there are two three-hour sessions taught by Kory Sutherland, and children can come to one or stay for both. The morning session, All About Texture, is about seeing and feeling surfaces: the group hunts around the Capitoline building for textures to make rubbings, turns the patterns into collages, draws on rough sandpaper and finger-paints with washable paint on very smooth paper. The afternoon session, All About Paper, starts with upcycling paper egg cartons into homemade paper clay mixed with flour and glue, moves on to a team challenge building paper skyscrapers, and ends with a 3D collage made by twisting, folding, quilling and crumpling paper. Each session has its own registration through the HoCo Arts online store, so families who want the full day book both.
