About this adventure
A National Park Service site on Fort George Island where families can walk the grounds of a 19th-century plantation, including the planter's house, outbuildings and the remains of the tabby cabins where enslaved people lived. The site tells the stories of the people who were enslaved here, some of whom later became free landowners, as well as the Kingsley family. An audio tour, The Lion's Storyteller, guides a self-paced visit, and children can ask about the Junior Ranger program. On weekends the inside of the planter's home opens for limited open houses. The site is reached by a two-mile dirt road (Palmetto Ave.) or by Fort George Road, which is paved but can flood at extreme tides; there is also a small dock and a kayak landing.
