About this adventure
A free two-day beachfront festival in Fernandina Beach that marks the yearly return of endangered North Atlantic right whales to the warm coastal waters off northeast Florida and Georgia, where they give birth to and nurse their calves. With fewer than 370 of the whales left, the festival explains the threats they face and how people can help them recover. Families find ocean-themed activities and exhibits from local groups working to protect the whales, with an emphasis on marine science education and environmentally responsible recreation. It is a good outing for school-age kids interested in marine animals, and the beach is right there for a walk afterward.
