Johnson County Park & Recreation District kicks off the season by switching on its holiday flagpole light display at John Barkley Plaza in Shawnee Mission Park. The short, free-feeling community gathering on Wednesday evening, November 18, has carolers and cocoa from 5:15 p.m., followed at 5:30 p.m. by brief remarks and the moment the lights come on, with live music and refreshments. It is an easy weeknight outing for families with young children, since the whole program lasts well under an hour; the JCPRD board meeting starts afterward at 6 p.m. Dress for the weather, as the plaza is outdoors.
