About this adventure

In this second Woven Throughout History workshop, Las Vegas artist Xochil shows families how plants can create color for textiles. After a short introduction to plant-based dyeing traditions from cultures around the world, participants use warm wax tools to draw resist patterns inspired by batik on paper or cloth, then dip their designs into prepared natural dye baths made from materials such as hibiscus or turmeric. As the dye colors the fibers, the wax resists the pigment and reveals the pattern underneath. Each participant leaves with a naturally dyed artwork and an understanding of plant pigments, how fibers absorb color and resist-dye techniques. The workshop runs 11 AM to 1 PM; the page's age recommendation is cut off in the copy that could be read.
